Last
Halloween, a holiday celebrated in the United States
on October 31st, I partook in a costume
contest at my workplace. I was unable to drive while
wearing the full ensemble. Once parked in the
company lot, I donned the full costume and waddled
into the building. My costume consisted of the
following: a one-piece zippered, oversized, purple
fleece pajama suit; two kitchen trash bags stuffed
with Fill-Air Inflatable Packaging packets; a green
beret; two long sets of vines with grapes and leaves
attached; and a sign attached to my chest which read
“Don’t tell Welch’s that I’m here!” I was a runaway
Concord grape.
I loved my
colleagues’ reactions. The best response occurred
once I was seated at my station and someone began to
walk by. I was so round that I could hardly reach
the computer keyboard. Also, I found it more
comfortable to rest my chin on the newly-acquired
bulk. I had only stuffed the front side so I could
sit down during the day. However, in order to sit
down, I had to plan it carefully—reaching behind me
to secure the seat before lowering myself onto it.
I truly believe that if I had missed, I would have
needed help to get off the floor.
At any rate,
someone from a neighboring department began to pass
by and happened to glance my way. She stopped
short. Her mouth opened and closed several times,
and then she began to laugh so hard that tears
streamed down her face. Soon, she held her arms
across her stomach, as if in pain. As the laughter
subsided, she made the mistake of looking my way
again. I was, by then, grinning widely, with my
arms resting on top of my immensity. That set her
off once more. Soon, many other colleagues came to
check out what was causing her mirth. That’s when
the picture-taking began.
A few minutes
later, my company held its daily morning meeting.
As I entered the conference room, the administrators
got their first glimpse of me. Ha! They were
shocked into silence. Then laughter. It felt good
to cause amusement, particularly in such a serious
place of business. I tell you, the response I
generated due to the unexpectedness of seeing a
rolly-polly grape in a white-collar industry made
the effort worthwhile.
One of the
best parts of transforming into a Concord grape was
stunning people who thought they had me
pigeon-holed. Since most of my colleagues only know
a small amount about me, they have made certain
assumptions. I think I destroyed some of them on
Halloween. I am not just a colleague. I am not
just a Massachusetts attorney. I am not just an
educator. I am not just a writer, or photographer,
or…the list goes on and on, not just about me, but
for every person. We get labeled, but often
inaccurately. I know, for my part, it is due to my
caution with what I reveal. I choose what I allow
others to see. I wear my business mask in the
workplace. Even at work-hosted events, such as
holiday parties and happy hours, I am careful with
what I divulge. I may seem relaxed and open, but I
am not—at least not until I have determined how
intimate I wish to be within a given environment.
Have you ever
thought of your behavior while with another person?
More particularly, how your behavior changes
according to whose company you keep? We present
façades. I have several façades according to the
given situation. With loved ones I act one way,
with peers, another way. Strangers, friends,
acquaintances, colleagues, clients, adversaries—all
differently. I allow myself to be vulnerable to
various extents, a sliding scale based upon the
connection, my motivation, and the anticipated
reception.
As an
extension of these façades, I naturally slip into
different dialects. While conversing with my twin
brother, I’ll revert back to a slang-filled,
blue-collar, inner-city dialect. The next moment,
I’ll speak to an attorney regarding a real estate
transaction, dipping into “legalese” language
without missing a beat. Ask me about a favorite
author, playwright, or poet, and I will dive into
literary jargon. All these are natural outgrowths
of my personality—created through experience,
instinct, and societal norms. The dialectal changes
ground me into the façade’s characteristics in a
concrete, yet organic way.
From an early
age, we learn to interact in certain ways—when to
speak, when to be silent, when to act, when to
remain still. We were shaped by our parents,
friends, teachers, and siblings. Through this
process we developed our personas, our façades, our
masks. As we grew older, we became more adept at
interpreting reactions and anticipating the best
mask to don.
Have you ever
attended a function where everyone is staid and
proper? Then, in comes a stranger, flamboyant and
loud, flitting from group to group and talking to
everyone? Have you seen the reactions of the others
in the room? Some are amused, others envious, and a
few are down-right angry—angry that this person
seems to be ignoring the tacit decorum which
everyone else had been following. This newcomer did
not don the right mask! This person is not
presenting the correct façade!
What is
fascinating about façades is how easy it is to slip
into them—how fluid they are. At times, I don a
mask to preserve and protect myself. We all wear
masks. Do you remember the song “Masquerade” from
the musical Phantom of the Opera? “Hide your
face, so the world will never find you. Masquerade!
Every face a different shade. Masquerade! Look
around—there’s another mask behind you.” Most
people are cognizant on some level that they play
varying roles according to the situations
presented. In fact, one could argue that it is
irresponsible not to adjust one’s behavior at
certain times. What happens, though, when you do
not have a mask to don, such as in a new social
situation? At those points when you find yourself
out of your comfort zone, what do you do?
How about what
happens when you confuse the masks? When you act
the “wrong” way? When you use a persona that is
“acceptable” in one type of situation for a
different scenario? For example, what happens if
you act reserved with your friends when normally you
are outgoing? Do they ask you if something is
wrong? Do they notice?
Can a person
ever just be herself in any and every given
situation, making no changes to herself whatsoever,
regardless of the circumstances? Is it possible to
know what that is like? Does that leave a person too
vulnerable, not having self-created shields to
protect her? Why do we need such protection? Do you
know who you are when you take off the masks,
release the façades, and remove the personas?

Pigments
– the rainbow of nutrients in vegetables and fruits are a
group of phyto-chemicals that are amongst the most
beneficial elements found in living foods. Plant pigments
are important cues to humans and other herbivorous animals
in helping identify plants, find plant parts such as fruit,
leaves, stems, roots, or tubers, and determine stages of
plant development such as fruit ripeness or overall
senescence. Major plant pigments include carotenoids,
anthocyanins and other flavonoids, betalains, and
chlorophylls.
Chlorophylls
capture light energy and convert it into chemical energy.
Carotenoids protect the chlorophylls from photo-oxidation
and are accessory, light-harvesting pigments and
photoreceptors. Flavonoids include red or blue anthocyanins
and white or pale yellow compounds such as rutin, quercitin,
and kaempferol.
Research
into plant pigments and nutrition began in 1919 when
symptoms of vitamin A deficiency were eliminated from rats
which were fed corn, sweet potato and carrots. Since then,
over 40 carotenoids have been found to be vitamin A
precursors. These are enzymatically broken down to make
retinol, vitamin A. Findings since the 1970s have indicated
that plant pigments are believed to function as "chemopreventers"
which protect plants in photosynthesis also protect humans
from carcinogens and heart disease. The important
characteristic common to all chemopreventers is their
antioxidant capacity. These phytochemicals
appear to maintain health by boosting the immune system,
reducing inflammation and allergies, detoxifying
contaminants and pollutants, and/or activating enzymes that
block unbridled cell division.
Lutein - along with several other carotenes
- gives summer squash, apricots, peaches, and oranges their
yellow to light-orange color. But its richest sources are
kale, spinach, and collard greens, in which the yellow
pigment is masked by the more abundant green chlorophyll.
Lycopene gives tomatoes their bright red color. High
intakes may protect against prostate cancer. "Increasing
consumption of fruits and vegetables is an effective
strategy for preventing diseases of aging," says Clevidence,
a researcher.
As
LIGHTarians, it makes perfect sense to be interested in
capturing LIGHT energy and converting it to bio-available
forms for nourishing, maintaining and regenerating the body,
mind and spirit. Plant pigments as photo (LIGHT) –receptors
and harvesters are a rainbow of life giving phyto-chemicals.
Imagine the chakras and the frequencies of colored LIGHT
energy from beetroot to blueberry and beyond. I have seen
many methods for tuning up chakras, from tuning forks to
hands on healing, yet conscious application of food colors
to help is not widely practiced. The purest, most
concentrated and bio-available way to get your colors is to
juice it from organic vegetables and fruits. And remember
sprouts are also incredible sources of LIGHT ENERGY.

When I first
started my Reiki path in 1998, it was from a decision
that I came to after being in the veterinary industry
for many years and from the frustration of feeling that
there must be something more that we can do for our
furry friends.
Animal Reiki or
Pet Reiki is an up and coming part of what we can do
with our skills as Reiki practitioners. Many classes
are being taught, schools are being formed for the main
purpose of helping our companions and wild life
friends. When I first started, there was not a class to
be had. Even Reiki classes were hard to come by. So
when I was ready to start practicing on animals, I
basically had to trust my inner knowings.
As my first client
came to me, two things always stuck in my mind:
Reiki never does
any harm
Reiki goes where
it is needed the most
This got me
through my initial uncertainties; so, I rolled up my
sleeves and began my first session. I approached my
first client with so much love in my heart and so much
compassion as to the pain the dog was in that
facilitating Reiki seemed natural. He was suffering
from acute pancreatitis. The owners were giving him 24
hours to turn around or he would be euthanized. The
Reiki session lasted for 5 hours and by the next morning
the dog was pretty much pain free, energetic and ready
to start eating. A miracle, yes. A happy ending, yes.
But this is Reiki after all.
Through the years,
I have come to understand that Reiki always honors the
will of the animal. As we approach an animal with love,
we are in alignment with the Reiki way of being. Through
that love stems compassion: two of the most important
tools we have besides Reiki to be successful in treating
animals.
When approaching
the treatment of an animal, keep in mind these tips:
for the most part, conversations are
always short, and quite one sided
if you work with an aggressive
animal, facilitate it as a remote or distant session
Reiki assists the animal in what they
need, not always what we want
Working with
animals can be challenging as no verbal feedback from
the client is spoken. It is hard also from the aspect
that though the owners have told us their pet's
symptoms, we quite often do not know the underlying
cause of the disease process and whether or not we are
helping the animal to get well or to help the animal
through his or her transition process. It can also be
very difficult to accept when an animal does decide,
through the help of Reiki, to make the final
transition. As sad as our perception of death may be,
these cases still have happy endings. Their suffering
has ended and through Reiki they reach a place of
peace.
From love and
compassion, grows the instinctive understanding of what
the animal wants and needs, honoring that animal, and
giving honor and integrity to the animal through the
disease process and the client/practitioner
relationship.
Many of my
students have stated that they would never think of
practicing on animals due to the fact that they have no
knowledge of animal anatomy and diseases that can plague
our furry friends. This brings the big question to
mind, do you need to have knowledge of veterinary
medicine in order to practice Reiki on animals? My
answer is always the same to this question. No, it is
not important or necessary. It is all about perception.
How many of us have the medical knowledge of a nurse or
doctor when we start to practice on people? The only
knowledge we have is what we ourselves have read or
experienced. We have no specialized training in the
medical field, yet we perform Reiki on people soon after
our first attunement. Given similar knowledge of
animals, a practitioner should be able to start
practicing Reiki on animals easily. If the animal is
willing, then giving Reiki to animals is as simple as
giving our pets hugs, kisses, and of course petting.
The symbols are
the same be it for people or animals, if you are using
symbols in your practice. Hand positions vary from
client to client, so there are no restrictions there and
nothing new to learn. Just as we adjust our hands with
human clients, we allow the pets to tell us what they
prefer through their body positioning. Some animals
love to be cuddled as they receive Reiki, some animals
prefer the practitioner's hands to lay gently on their
bodies. For very small wildlife, birds and bunnies for
instance, they enjoy being cupped in the practitioner's
hands. Again, we also must remember that when
performing Reiki, though we set our intention, Universal
energy will go where it is needed the most in both
animal and people.
Animals serve as
our teachers as well. Granted, I was taught Reiki
traditionally, in the classroom like everyone else.
Animals have taught me much that I do not think I would
have learned in a classroom or if I solely worked on
people. I have learned what unconditional love is, as
that is how animals love. I have learned to love my
clients unconditionally, no strings, no expectations.
As a practitioner, one develops a unique bond with one's
client. Animals give us a friendship based on
innocence, gratitude and love that we quite often do not
see with our human clients. I have learned that ego has
no place in what we do. That, though we intend to help
this animal heal, we have no control as to how they
receive. I have learned that to approach a client, one
must be totally open in intention and expectation. I
have learned that the true payment we receive for what
we do is not placed in dollar value. Granted it's a
nice benefit to receive after a session. But what we
receive in exchange for a session is that unconditional
love and gratitude for being there for them. It is also
the feeling of unconditional love and gratitude that we
have for the animals in allowing us to be part of their
lives during this critical time. As we channel the
energy to the animal, we receive a great sense of peace
and love that Source has for these furry children,
reflecting a gentle state of being.
Working with
wildlife has been a very unique and wonderful experience
for me, one that increased in leaps and bounds as I
walked my Lightarian Reiki path. My list of
clients has been truly interesting: skunks, raccoons,
squirrels, deer, hawks, owls, hummingbirds and even a
dragon fly. Every day, I have guests appear in my
backyard or on my back porch, waiting for me to come out
and begin my sessions. The squirrels seem to be the
first to show up, and they announce their presence by
peering into my windows, gently tapping on them. My day
ends with deer congregating in my back yard in the
afternoon and early evening, waiting patiently for their
turn. I provide a safe haven for all who come and
share in the experience. They honor me with their
presence, their trust, and their gratitude. Granted
some days are busier than others, but what truly amazes
me is the dynamics they create as they all congregate,
as they trust one another and respect each other.
Though wary, the squirrels come and go while the hawk is
making his presence known and that he is ready to
receive, perching on my banister. A respectful distance
is always kept, but what would normally send these
critters into a state of nervousness, they just calmly
accept until their sessions are done and they are on
their way.
I have been truly
blessed through Reiki by experiencing the opportunity to
share the lives of so many, to learn to love in that
special way. In working with animals, I've learned what
ego truly is. Surely we do receive benefits from that
aspect of ourselves; it gives us confidence. But it
also can be the greatest source of our stress in our
lives. It can hinder our progress on our spiritual
paths by interfering. I have learned that through
unconditional love, I allow myself to be open to the
possibilities of what living has to offer, making some
pretty interesting friendships along the way.

Change is
Constant:
Navigating
Through the Energy Shifts
by Peggy Zeramby
Change is a constant presence in our lives.
Change is cyclical, ritualistic and always moving us forward
towards Self-Actualization. Listening to the news
around the world, it is apparent that there are many
changes occurring -- financial, war related, community
oriented. Some feel very good and others could
bring us to a lower vibrational level. It is also
cyclical -- sometimes all we hear is the low points and
other times we are encouraged by the highs.
Through this global time of change, remember that we are
the Leaders, the Anchors for the LOVE and LIGHT in this
plane.
As
we tune into Gaia's song, we can also feel the touch of
the angels' wings, the embrace by the Ascended Masters,
the touch by the ET energies. Remember it is our
role to anchor love, prosperity, joy, and bliss, to tune
into the true energetic current, and to be the "I AM" or
the "ALL IS WELL" vibrational thought. How do we
anchor this fully into the earth plane? Through
conscious breathing, meditation, exercise, and through
feeling gratitude we anchor in the Love and Light.
As we stay grounded in Abundance, Joy, and Bliss, we
Self Actualize. As we Self Actualize, our Higher
Selves are living more and more authentically in our day
to day lives. Higher Self can sometimes be seen by
us on the earth plane as a separate entity....yet it is
not. Higher Self is truly our Higher Wisdom that
orchestrates our experiences. As we live life from
that intelligence, our chakras and auras expand
and become brighter and are filled with Light. As
people create their personal expansion, their energetic
bodies connect and overlap, and the resulting human
energetic grid replaces the lack. The momentum is
here. We are moving towards this outcome.
As
Lightworkers, when news enters our consciousness of
happenings reflecting lack and fear, it is up to us to
stop, breath, and think instead about the Light through
visualizing positive outcomes. As people speak of
their fears of financial distress, we can anchor in
abundance in this same way. As the news comes in
of the wars or other types of violence that are
demonstrated with weapons and words, we can anchor in
peace and love. We each can do our part and create
the web of Love and Light throughout the globe.
I
have been shown from the perspective of our energetic
friends what this earth looks like. I see a grid
of the world -- there is more LIGHT anchored into our
earth plane than there is not. We can help to
continue to spread the LIGHT by meditating and
encouraging others to connect with their Higher Wisdom.
